Laser welding of thin metal plate onto thick base material Carrier: Stainless steel Lid: Tantalum. Laser cutting allows thin tantalum to be cut into a grid pattern with arbitrary shaped holes. The lid can be laser cut maintaining flatness of the lid. When the thin lid is welded onto the carrier the flatness of the metal lid is maintained within 50 microns. Traditionally without lasers welding (and the control of heat transferred to the part) such thin material would not be possible and would melt a hole along the side of the lid before attaching it.
