This video shows real-time remote cutting using a 1kW single mode fibre laser from IPG Photonics. This work was done at the Fraunhofer Institute IWS Dresden and was first presented at ICALEO 2007. The trepanning technique using a laser replaces the mechanical process of using a drill bit to make holes in material. The size of the hole is easily controlled by computer to produce either large or small holes and after set up different sized holes can be produced in the part during the production process.
