Process: carbon steel hardened with direct diode laser power 2kW Industrial sector: automotive Material: steel Other notes: With >0.25% carbon content can generally be surface hardened in selected regions of interest by transformation hardening. The laser operates in conjunction with a pyrometer which measures the surface temperature as the laser rapidly heats it. Closed loop control ensures that the material reaches the required critical temperature within +/- 5°C regardless of the effects of geometry local to the current heating position on thermal conductivity.
