Process: carbon steel hardened with direct diode laser power 2kW Industrial sector: automotive Material: steel Other notes: this door closure spring needs to be hard to withstand wear in certain regions but as it will be flexed many thousands of times it must not become brittle as a consequence of hardening. The laser hardens the surface only and only in the regions selected. With >0.25% carbon content can generally be surface hardened in selected regions of interest by transformation hardening. The laser operates in conjunction with a pyrometer which measures the surface temperature as the laser rapidly heats it. Closed loop control ensures that the material reaches the required critical temperature within +/- 5°C regardless of the effects of geometry local to the current heating position on thermal conductivity.
