The photograph shows the typical cross section of a laser keyhole weld produced in thick section CMn steel. At the top the weld has been made in a simple pass from one side of the material and in the lower photograph a two pass weld one pass from each side has been used. The small volume of material melted to make this type of weld reduces the heat input when compared to conventional processes such as arc welding.
