Microchannels in polycarbonate: many biomedical and biotechnology applications require the controlled movement of fluids in complex devices. Glasses and polymers are common materials in these devices and the production of high quality microchannels is an ideal task for laser machining. The inherent flexibility of laser machining means that the channel sizes and geometries can be changed very easily. Both direct write (using focussed laser beams) and mask projection (using excimer lasers) can be used to make channels such as these.
